Traditional vs Water-Fed Window Cleaning: An Equipment Guide for NZ

Choosing commercial window-cleaning equipment starts with the glass, access and finish you need. Traditional washer-and-squeegee tools and pure-water water-fed systems work differently. This guide explains the distinction so you can check the right components before buying.

Traditional window cleaning: washer, squeegee and detailing cloth

A washer or T-bar and sleeve loosens dirt with a suitable cleaning solution. A squeegee removes the water from the glass, and a clean cloth finishes edges where needed. Match the channel and replacement rubber to your tool size, and check that handles, poles and adaptors fit together.

For shopfronts and interior glass, consider the width of each pane, the space available to move the tool and how you will control drips. A wider channel can cover a broad pane, while a smaller size is easier to position on narrow sections.

What makes a water-fed system a pure-water system?

A pure-water setup combines a suitable pole, water-fed brush, hose and a supply of purified water. The brush agitates dirt and the purified water rinses the glass. Water purification commonly uses deionisation (DI), reverse osmosis (RO), or both. These processes reduce dissolved minerals that can leave marks when ordinary tap water dries.

A telescopic extension pole is not automatically water-fed. A water-fed pole connected to an ordinary tap is not automatically a pure-water system either. Check the complete specification, including water treatment, hose connections, brush compatibility and the manufacturer's maintenance requirements.

Choose for the job, then confirm the fit

For traditional tools, check channel width, rubber profile, handle connection and pole adaptor. For a pure-water setup, also check the water source, purification equipment, brush, hoses and ongoing filter or resin requirements. Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions and assess access before selecting a method.

Pole length is not the same as working height. The building layout, operator position and equipment combination all affect reach. Send the details of your existing handle, pole and adaptor when asking about compatibility.

Keep the parts that wear out easy to replace

Inspect squeegee rubber for wear and damage, and replace it when it no longer produces a consistent finish. Rinse washers and clean tools after use according to their care instructions. Keep compatible spare rubbers on hand, and check the size and profile before ordering.
